Fire, more than anything, has allowed man to evolve over millennia. Without fire and the ability to control, man would have certainly become extinct. Throughout time fire has been used as an offensive and defensive weapon. It has help conquer empires and it has provided protection from predators.
Fire has symbolized destruction and it has symbolized passion. It has represented new beginnings, the Phoenix for example. Fire purifies. Fire strengthens. Fire lives. It’s born, develops and grows and eventually dies out.
There are innumerable references to fire in the Bible, the burning bush, Sodom and Gomorrah and the Lake of Fire. Fire can represent a warning, think of Paul Revere’s ride and how fire played an important role in letting militias know that the British were coming. Which brings us to present day.
It’s role as it relates to OVERLANDING
In terms of off grid camping or overlanding fire provides warmth, it provides the ability to cook and most importantly it’s a gathering spot for fellowship and the cultivation of friendships new and old. It warms the space where stories are told, some true some not, and where memories are born.
The next time you are at camp, take in all the things we take for granted about a campfire. Watch how alive a fire is as the flames dance around, feel the warmth it provides. Look around your camp at how the campfire lights up the surrounding area. Listen to the sounds the firewood makes as it burns and yes, even the smell of the smoke. All of these things contribute to the amazing atmosphere a campfire provides.
